Community Outreach

ALA Headquarters developed a Community Connection program to encourage Chapters to give back to their communities. The OC-ALA's Community Connection Committee coordinates an event each October where many members of the Chapter, along with their law firms, business partners, family and friends undertake a project in order to assist those that are less fortunate in the Orange County area and to also raise awareness of ALA and our local chapter.

Over the years, OC-ALA has worked with a number of organizations to support its activities and events.  Here are the more recent organizations our Chapter has partnered with for CCW:

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Orange County is a non-profit organization that trains community volunteers to serve as powerful mentors and advocates for our community's most severely abused, abandoned and neglected children who have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care. The one-on-one pairing of a CASA volunteer and child creates a relationship where each child is receiving the support or attention needed while moving through the foster care process.  The volunteer advocates are a powerful voice for the children, advising the court about what the child wants and needs while providing the emotional support and stability and nurturing every child deserves.

It is the mission of the Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF) to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. CAF believes that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life.

Orange County’s Early Literacy Program distributes thousands of new and gently used books every month to children being served by programs that promote literacy. OCALA collected books that will be placed in the hands of children to support the development of early reading skills.

Orange County Children’s Book Festival. Each year, an all-day interactive festival is held on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Children and their families are invited to experience the exciting world of reading. OCALA assisted with the display of books and with reading and drawing activities, which, along with entertainment, musicians, food and drinks, made this a successful event.

Clean Water Now! Coalition (“CWN!C”) is dedicated to the protection, restoration and preservation of aquatic and riparian ecologies worldwide.” OCALA assisted with the clean-up of many miles of beautiful coastline in Laguna Beach. This annual event which started locally has become an international event, including 25 U.S. states; and has spread to the cleanup of streams and lakes.

Few schools can match the ability of the Blind Children's Learning Center faculty and staff in addressing the developmental needs of each student. Their skills in providing an artful balance of nurturing support and challenging therapies distinguish our faculty and staff as extraordinary educators.

Through demonstrating in and out of the classroom deep respect for the unique capabilities and talents of their students, our teachers, volunteers and administrators create an environment that prepares BCLC students for independent and productive lives.

The vision of the Illumination Foundation is to break the cycle of homelessness. Our public/private partnership combines housing and social services with healthcare and behavioral mental health services to reduce the impacts of homelessness and reduce people's vulnerability to future homelessness.

We offer a low-entry threshold to advance health and housing stability for the most vulnerable members of our community, with a focus on families with children and those with medical or mental health conditions.

We empower adults with the tools to become self-sufficient and inspire children to grow into independent, productive adults.
