ALA Headquarters developed a Community Challenge Weekend ("CCW") program to encourage Chapters to give back to their communities. The OC-ALA's Community Outreach Committee coordinates an event each October where many members of the Chapter, along with their law firms, business partners, family and friends undertake a project in order to assist those that are less fortunate in the Orange County area and to also raise awareness of ALA and our local chapter.

Over the years, OC-ALA has worked with a number of organizations to support its activities and events.  Here are the more recent organizations our Chapter has partnered with for CCW:

Orange County’s Early Literacy Program distributes thousands of new and gently used books every month to children being served by programs that promote literacy. OCALA collected books that will be placed in the hands of children to support the development of early reading skills.

Orange County Children’s Book Festival. Each year, an all-day interactive festival is held on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Children and their families are invited to experience the exciting world of reading. OCALA assisted with the display of books and with reading and drawing activities, which, along with entertainment, musicians, food and drinks, made this a successful event.

Clean Water Now! Coalition (“CWN!C”) is dedicated to the protection, restoration and preservation of aquatic and riparian ecologies worldwide.” OCALA assisted with the clean-up of many miles of beautiful coastline in Laguna Beach. This annual event which started locally has become an international event, including 25 U.S. states; and has spread to the cleanup of streams and lakes.
